Torshavn Christmas in Faroe Islands
This week, a little something special. We talk with Stanley Samuelsen about his memories of Christmas as a child in the Faroe Islands. Then he sings us a Faroese Christmas song. The show is only about 10 minutes long, but it packs a lot of holiday joy into a small space.

As always, you can listen on iTunes, or on our media player above, or you can download the show directly here:

Also, Stanley did a great performance for us in 2010 that is well worth hearing, you can find it here:

Podcast 119: Americans Off The Hook

This week, we talk to an American (pictured, below) and visit a hook (pictured, above).

The American is James McGrath. He's a freelance writer and a student living in Connecticut. He's visited the Faroes several times, and he's shared some of his impressions with our good friend Heri Simonsen.

The hook is a work of public art in Klaksvik that was actually the source of some controversy last year. Could this giant hook be a menace to public safety? Listen and find out.

As always, you can listen on iTunes, on our media player above, or you can download the show directly here:

NOTE: In this week's show, we promised to upload some of James's articles. We're experiencing some technical difficulties with that, but we'll have that material posted in this space soon.

Podcast 118: Groundhopping 2: Electric Boogaloo

This week, part two of our conversation with Graham Yapp. He's the charming English groundhopper who traveled to the Faroes last spring. While we talked mostly about football (soccer) last time, this week we'll talk more about the Faroese people, and the joy of doing nothing.

Then we sit and do nothing (noticing a trend?) on a peninsula just south of Strendur (pictured above). We'll also cover several news items including the hurricane that hit the Faroe Islands last week, and the ongoing homicide investigation.

Podcast 117: Groundhopping

This week, we talk to Graham Yapp. He's an English groundhopper who visited the Faroe Islands last spring with the intent of visiting as many football (soccer) grounds as he could in two weeks. He sometimes used unique methods to chose what match he'd see next (see above video).

We catch up with Yapp and learn what brought him to the Faroes and what exactly is groundhopping.

Podcast 116: A Good Walk, Ruined

This week, we visit the only golf course on the Faroe Islands. As you can see, it has spectacular views. It's also one of the oddest courses out there. Perhaps the only one where sheep are among the hazards to avoid while driving to the green.

As always, you can listen on iTunes, or on our media player above. Or you can download the show directly here:

On this week's show we talk about salmon. Farmed salmon from the Faroe Islands is becoming increasingly sought after by chefs in top kitchens in both US and UK. This week, we talk to the man responsible for marketing Faroese salmon to the rest of the world.

Also, we head back to the spooky tunnels north of Klaksvik to see if the ghosts will turn up for a second performance.

Podcast 112: Kalsoy

This week, an extra-long show devoted entirely to the mysterious island of Kalsoy.

This rugged island is home to four small villages. We visit all of them as part of our quest to find someone who actually actually lives on the island. We end up spending some time with a 17-year-old Trollanes resident named Alfred (pictured above) and he shares with us some of the history of his village of only 16 people.

Podcast 109: G! Festival 2011, Part 2. Budam, Hogni, and Marius

This week, more from this summer's G! Festival. We'll here some live music from Marius and Hogni, then and interview and performance from Budam (pictured above).

Marius and Hogni will be familiar to longtime listeners of the show, but this is Budam's first appearance on this podcast. He makes music that he calls "dramatic folk rock influenced by jazz... and things". You really just need to hear it. And you're in luck. This show contains a full song recorded during a private performance in July, and a little from Budam's live set at the G! Festival last July.

Also, if you scroll down to the previous post, we've got a bonus track from that performance.

As for the podcast itself, you can listen on iTunes, on our media player above, or download the show directly here:

Budam Bonus Batter

We'll be posting this week's podcast within the next 24 hours or so, but here's a little something to get you into the mood. The show will recap more highlights of the G! Festival, and feature an extended interview with Budam.

Last July, Budam gave a short, impromptu performance for a small group of international journalists. We feature one song on the podcast, but there's a second song seemed "too hot for the podcast" that we'll offer as a download here.

We're not joking about that designation, however. While the song doesn't contain any explicit language, it's overtly sexual in a way that may not be appropriate for small children... or people who just don't like songs on that subject.

With that in mind, here's a little Budam unplugged:

Voting Tutorial

Hello, all! We're up for a European Podcast Award, and we need your help. Basically, we need you to vote for us. But since the voting site is in Danish, we understand that could cause some problems for many of our listeners. With that in mind, here's the easiest way to vote for what I'm sure is your favorite podcast ever:

First go to:

From there, click on "vote." So far it's all pretty straightforward, but then it gets a little more confusing if you don't know Danish.

The next page has two sets of stars, the top one is for design, and the lower one is for content. Click as many stars as you wish (might we suggest five?) and then click on the small button below that says "Stem og vind!"

Once you've done that, you're good to go. There will be a field on the next page asking for an email address, but you don't have to use it.

You're only allowed to vote once from each IP address, so don't need to come back again and again.

Thanks for your support. Now let's go get us some awards!

Podcast 106: World Cup Super Preview

Why a super preview? Because qualifying play doesn't start for another year, that's why.

But nevertheless, the draw for the qualifying matches for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil took place last month, and we are duty-bound to look into it. The Faroe Islands National Team (out-of-date photo above) is in group "C", and they've got some stiff competition.

So sort this all out, we've got our International Football Correspondent David Scally in. He'll help us handicap Group C, and pick a team that the Faroes just might upset.

Then we'll visit the "nice" neighborhood in Torshavn and explore just what "nice" means.

As always, you can listen on iTunes or on our media player at the top of the page. Or you can download the show directly here:

Also, if you want to hear our initial interview with Scally where he tells the story of his wild trip to the Faroe Islands in 2008, just scroll down this page and look for the entry just below this one.

Bonus Brew: David Scally

Our guest this week on the radio show and podcast is David Scally. We're going to be talking about the World Cup draw, but it's worth revisiting how the lovely and talented Mr. Scally came to our attention.

Scally had a wild adventure while attempting to travel to the Faroes to see his beloved Manchester City take on EB/Streymur. It involved a fishing trawler, an emergency flight, and a trip to the hospital. In the process, Scally landed on the front pages of newspapers in both the Faroes and the UK.

So prepare for Scally's return to the Faroes by listening to his previous appearances on the podcast, as he shared his amazing story...

The reactions of a 5 year old kid.

The Faroe Islands Podcast, feels obligated to tell the story of this little 5 year old kid, from Skopun, Sandoy, and his reaction to the horrific actions in Norway.

The family says: "Our son, Ísak, 5 year old, which is ½ norwegian, has understood that something terrible has happened in Norway, in these last few days. He surprised us last night, after he'd been playing outside, he called us out, to witness a memorial site, which he himeself, without encouragement, had built."

Ísak told the family: "This memorial, is for all of those who are crying in Norway, because an evil man has shot Norway. Later he said, that when they see this memorial, they will know that Jesus is comforting them."

Podcast 101: Looking Back at the 2010 G! Fest

In preparation for this year's journey to the Faroes, we take a look back at last year's G! Festival. The three-day event was almost derailed by a massive storm that damaged the campsite and washed away most of the beach at Gota.

Festival organizer Jon Tyril takes us through the events of that tense first day and explains how the festival ended on a high note.

This week, we're all about the Faroese postal service, known as Posta. We'll talk to the director of marketing for Posta to learn about the history of mail delivery in the Faroes, and ask the most important question of all: is it possible to work in an industry obsessed with on-time delivery when you live in the Land of Maybe?

We're not giving away the answer, you'll just have to listen.

Then we'll sail along the west coast of Hestur and look at the bird cliffs.

Who Was That Guy?

We've gotten several questions from people who listened to yesterday's story on The Story with Dick Gordon about the music contained in that story.

It's from none other than Stanley Samuelsen, who was a guest on our show about a year ago and did an interview and live performance. It is one of the best shows we've ever done and well worth another listen. Indeed, the song you heard on the radio Monday was actually an except of the live performance he did for us.

Podcast 81: Happy Birthday to Us

We’ll have part two of Durita Holm’s interview in a few days, but first, we take a moment to wish ourselves happy birthday.

The Faroe Islands Podcast turns two this week, so we (Tollak and Matt) sit down to discuss the origins of the show and remember our favorite moments of the past two years. The show is that conversation, presented with minimal editing. It’s our little birthday present to you. Anyone who listens will understand the significance of the less-than-flattering photo at the top of this post.

And while we’ve got your attention, let’s highlight a serious oversight during the discussion. We listed some of our favorite interviews of the past two years, but neglected to mention the show featuring Stanley Samuelsen. It wasn’t really an interview show, so I guess our minds didn’t register it as an interview. But it’s among our favorite things we’ve ever done, and we should’ve mentioned it. Also Marius. He did a great performance for us in 2009. If you haven’t heard it, you should go back into the archives and find it. It’s excellent.

So happy birthday to us, and thanks to all of you for listening to us and telling your friends about what we do. Our audience has grown a lot in the past two years, and it’s almost all through word of mouth. Thank you.

Note: Because part two of Durita Holm’s interview will post in a couple of days, this show will only be up on our media player for about 48 hours. If that’s how you like to listen, might we suggest you do it now?

On this week's show, we talk with Durita Holm, who sailed around the world when she was only 20. The journey took three years and, as you might expect, there were some adventures along the way.

Also, we visit a sobering memorial in Toftir (pictured above).

Podcast 78: Strangers at the Harbor

While recording some natural sound in the village of Æðuvík, we struck up a conversation with a man who was walking by. That brief chat forms the core of this week's podcast. We talk about New Year's Eve, sheep shearing, and brutal winter weather.
